I remember the day I bought a “Daytimer”. The black bonded leather of the binder felt cool under my hand. When I opened it, the leather creaked a bit as I put the calendar pages in to start my productive life. The excitement of making my “To Do List” and scheduling my tasks was almost intoxicating. Finally, I was going to get everything done I needed to do! What a feeling.
After a couple of weeks, fewer and fewer things got checked off. My lists got longer, and I was running out of lines to write down all the tasks on my ever growing “Not Getting Done” list. There didn’t seem to be enough time in my day to get everything done! My exhilaration at the thought of getting everything done turned into frustration that I couldn’t trust myself to get anything done. By the end of the first month, the binder collected dust on my dresser. Everytime I looked at it, a pang of guilt swept over me as i walked past it. If only I had 1 more hour in my day. I could get it all done.
The truth is, we all wish we had more hours in the day. Most of us fill out calendars with more to do than we have time for. And at the end of the day, we look at everything we haven’t done, and transfer our incomplete tasks to the next day. Our “To Do List” grows, and our “Not Getting Done” list gets even longer. What can we do?
We need to start with the simple acceptance that we only have 24 hours in a day. That’s it. Nothing we can do will change that. Prayer doesn’t give us more (unless you are Joshua in the Bible, and he only got one extra day), and rubbing magic lamps doesn’t work. This simple act of acceptance frees us from the illusion that we are all powerful and can do it all. Knowing our limits is the first step to managing our time.
Over the next few weeks, I will be blogging sharing with you tips I have learned from my own work and from other people more successful than me, to help you do what you need to, and have an enjoyable life. All through a few time management truths.
